Greek Mountain Tea (Sideritis)
Greek mountain tea is very popular throughout Mediterranean and southeastern Europe. It’s made from the Sideritis scardica plant, herb that grows at high altitudes in rocky soils. Epirus region of Greece is the ideal habitat for the Greek mountain tea, as well as for a series of herbs.
The scientific name, Sideritis, comes from the Greek word sideros, meaning iron and at ancient times it was used to heal battle wounds from iron weapons. That’s why the herb is commonly called ironwort. Shepherd’s tea is another common name as it was used from shepherds at high mountains.
Greek mountain tea is so popular because of its wide range of health benefits. Since antiquity, it was considered as a remedy for colds, aches, allergies, indigestion, respiratory issues and a boost for your immune system. All these claims proved to be true as various studies confirm that mountain tea is packed with flavonoids and antioxidants.
