HISTORY

three generations of specialization

The climate of Epirus is ideal for growing herbs, which are to be found in nature, flourishing on mountain slopes and green meadows, where they grow naturally.

When walking through the beautiful countryside of Epirus it is common to see plenty of Greek herbs, which provide the air with an aura unique to the area.

All the herbs found in Epirus today, are exactly the same herbs gathered thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece, and their main uses have remained unchanged. Most of the Greek herbs are used for medicinal purposes and also to provide Mediterranean cuisine with an unforgettable taste.

Many herbs resemble each other, both in appearance, aroma and smell but Greeks, through experience, and through knowledge, handed down from generation to generation, know a great deal about all herbs along with their specific uses. Chaidos family, cultivates herbs for nearly three generations at the high mountains of Thesprotia region of Epirus.

Greek Mountain tea (Sideritis) Hippocrates prescribed it as a tonic; it is one of the most popular herbal teas in Greece.

Oregano (Rigani) Oregano is the most commonly used herb in Mediterranean Cuisine, in Greek salads soups, stews, with meat and fish as well.

In Ancient Greece, it was believed to encourage good luck and good health and symbolize joy. Oregano was planted near homes to ward off evil spirits and when worn on the head during sleep, encouraged psychic dreams.

Hippocrates, father of medicine, wisely said:

“Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food”
